- Keypad codes work only when the gate is already open. The relay fires, but the operator isn’t receiving the signal. - The screen lights up on one caller and not another. On 1838 telephone entry units, that almost always means a failing output transistor on the relay module, not a programming fault. Replacing the whole board is the fix; replacing the transistor alone isn’t reliable past a few weeks.
- Codes delete themselves after a storm. Lightning strikes near the property induce voltage on the antenna line, and the memory chip is the first casualty. A surge arrestor on the radio feed and a grounded cabinet prevent repeats.
- The gate opens for every visitor, no code required. That’s a relay stuck closed. In Florida humidity, the contacts oxidize and can weld. This is the failure that makes a controlled entry point into a public driveway.
- You hear the relay click twice on one keypress. Indicates arcing across the relay, meaning the board is on its last useful days. We replace it before it welds closed for good.

You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the keypad beeps on every row, check that the cabinet is dry and the gasket hasn’t turned to chalk, and make sure no wire nut has vibrated loose. That’s where the safe DIY ends. DoorKing access control runs 24 volts DC control wiring and 120 volt AC supply into the same enclosure, and the relay terminals carry enough current to shock you or, worse, short across and burn a clean board. A wrong wire landed on a relay terminal can send line voltage down the control wiring straight to the gate operator motor.
